A Nigerian public health researcher, Nimotalai Kassim, has developed a data-driven framework aimed at helping public health agencies in the United States identify firearm violence risks earlier and deploy prevention resources more effectively.

Kassim, whose work combines epidemiological surveillance, geospatial analysis, behavioural health research and healthcare coordination, said the model was designed to move firearm violence prevention beyond traditional law enforcement by addressing it as a public health challenge.

She said her experience with the Connecticut Department of Public Health in the US inspired the approach after she used Geographic Information Systems to identify communities with elevated firearm injury risks.
Speaking on the significance of the research on Tuesday, Kassim said, “Traditional statistics can tell us how many incidents occurred, but geospatial analysis can help us understand where risks are concentrated and how those risks intersect with the conditions in which people live. When agencies understand both the location and the context of violence, they are better equipped to intervene.”
According to her, the framework integrates firearm injury data with indicators such as poverty, housing instability, unemployment, mental health needs, transportation barriers and access to healthcare to help authorities identify vulnerable populations, direct limited resources more effectively and measure the impact of interventions.
She explained that the initiative was informed by her work with multidisciplinary teams in Connecticut, where she contributed to firearm safety education, community violence prevention, surveillance data analysis, public outreach and stakeholder engagement.
The health administrator stated that her development of QGIS heat maps enabled health officials to visualise communities facing the highest firearm injury risks and prioritise interventions.
“My goal is not simply to produce another report describing the problem. It is to develop tools that help public health officials determine where to intervene, which services are missing, who is being overlooked and whether an intervention has made people safer,” she said.
Her contributions also extended to community-based advocacy. Through her volunteering with Connecticut Against Gun Violence, Kassim participated in public education, safe-storage awareness, community forums, violence-prevention campaigns, and the distribution of educational and support materials.
Beyond firearm violence, the researcher has conducted research on mental health awareness and stigma in Hartford, Connecticut, as well as psychosocial predictors of substance use disorders among adolescents.
Kassim noted that these studies strengthened her understanding of how social and family conditions contribute to violence, substance abuse and other adverse health outcomes.
She also highlighted the role of communities in violence prevention, stressing that residents often recognise emerging risks before they are reflected in official statistics.
“Communities should not be treated as passive recipients of public health programmes. Residents, educators, healthcare providers, community health workers, faith leaders, violence interrupters and local organisations often recognise emerging risks before those risks are fully reflected in official data. Their knowledge must be part of the solution,” Kassim added.
