Bola Tinubu, President and presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Atiku Abubakar, former Vice President and presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), and Peter Obi, former Anambra governor and presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Coalition (NDC), have intensified consultations over the composition of their campaign organisations ahead of the August 19 commencement of campaigns for the 2027 presidential election.

With barely two weeks to the official start of the campaigns fixed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the major political parties are finalising their campaign structures, with former governors emerging as leading contenders for the influential Director-General positions.

Credible sources hinted that in the APC, Hope Uzodimma, Imo State governor, and Tanko Al-Makura, former Nasarawa State governor, have emerged as the leading contenders to head Tinubu’s re-election campaign, although party sources said no final decision has been taken.
Some sources have also mentioned Abdul Aziz Yari, former Zamfara State governor and current Senator representing Zamfara West.
Insiders, however, said Uzodimma currently enjoys the backing of influential stakeholders, with the party weighing his political experience, organisational capacity, regional acceptability and religious considerations before making a final choice.
In the ADC, Aminu Tambuwal, former Sokoto State governor and Senator representing Sokoto South, has emerged as the frontrunner to direct Atiku’s presidential campaign, subject to ongoing consultations by party leaders.
If confirmed, Tambuwal, who led Atiku’s 2023 presidential campaign, is expected to work closely with Rotimi Amaechi, former Rivers State governor and Atiku’s running mate.
Sources in the NDC have also confirmed that consultations on Peter Obi’s campaign structure are ongoing, saying a Director-General will be announced after internal consultations are concluded.
BusinessDay reports that the Labour Party (LP), Social Democratic Party (SDP) among others are equally putting finishing touches to their campaign structures ahead of August 19.
Political observers say the choice of campaign Director-General could prove decisive in the 2027 race, as the office oversees nationwide mobilisation, campaign coordination, fundraising, media strategy and stakeholder engagement, making it one of the most influential positions after the presidential candidate and running mate.
