The Brigade identified the deceased as 12NA/67/1706 Corporal Ude Jude, an indigene of Enugu State who enlisted in 2012.
According to the statement, “ The Headquarters 17 Brigade Nigerian Army has noted with serious concern the circulation of misleading and inaccurate reports across some mainstream media outlets, regarding the death of a soldier within its area of responsibility. These reports, laced with distortions and unfounded allegations, are not only false but appear deliberately crafted to misinform the public and undermine confidence in the Nigerian Army.
“The Brigade categorically states that the deceased soldier has been wrongly identified in such reports as a Lieutenant. For clarity, the soldier is 12NA/67/1706 Corporal Ude Jude, a member of the 67 Regular Recruit Intake, who enlisted in the Nigerian Army in 2012 and is an indigene of Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State.
“Contrary to claims suggesting that the incident occurred within the barracks or was internally orchestrated, available records indicate that Corporal Ude Jude sustained injuries outside the barracks environment while deployed at Funtua Forward Operating Base, in Funtua Local Government Area of Katsina State. On 16 February 2026 at about 2030hrs, he reportedly left his duty location to procure personal items when he initially reported being attacked. The assailants reportedly fled the scene before he was assisted by members of the local community, after which he proceeded to the Medical Reception Station, where he reported the incident as an attack.
“Preliminary independent verification of circumstances surrounding the incident suggests that the soldier was involved in a physical altercation with another civilian over a personal dispute that night.
“Following the incident, he was promptly administered first aid and evacuated to the 17 Brigade Medical Centre, where he received continuous medical attention. In line with standard operational and welfare procedures, he was relieved of all duties and placed under medical supervision for recovery.
“Information from the Brigade Medical Centre indicated that the soldier presented with stab-related injuries sustained during the altercation, alongside other trauma-related wounds consistent with violent assault.
“These injuries required prolonged care, dressing and sustained clinical monitoring at the Medical Centre over the period. On 24 March 2026, Corporal Ude Jude reported to the Medical Centre, where his wounds were attended to before returning to his residence within the barracks.
“He was later reported to have collapsed outside his residence. Prompt response by nearby residents and personnel led to his immediate evacuation back to the Medical Centre, where he was confirmed dead on arrival by the Acting Commanding Officer of the Medical Centre, following emergency response efforts.
“The Headquarters 17 Brigade Nigerian Army further refutes claims of abandonment and neglect. The Garrison Commander, in the discharge of his command responsibilities, personally facilitated key post-death arrangements, including the provision of a coffin and payment for mortuary services and all necessary support in accordance with established military welfare provisions and extant administrative arrangements.
“The unit further liaised with 82 Division Garrison in Enugu, which subsequently provided additional institutional support, while all necessary accoutrements and honours befitting the deceased soldier’s service were formally handed over to the next of kin (NOK) as a mark of respect and recognition of his service to the nation. The unit also formally notified the family of his death and the circumstances surrounding the incident in line with military administrative procedures”.
Addressing the delay in their official response, the 17 Brigade explained that time was needed to consolidate eyewitness accounts and medical records to ensure accuracy and prevent the release of unverified details.
He said, “It is also to be noted that following the soldier’s death, time was required before issuing public clarification. This was necessary to allow for thorough internal verification, liaison with relevant formations, and consolidation of operational, eyewitness and medical information, as well as careful cross-checking of all accounts to ensure accuracy and prevent the release of unverified or incomplete details.
“Additionally, the Commander 17 Brigade Garrison maintained communication with the bereaved family throughout the period. The Garrison also formally notified higher headquarters, which resulted in the 82 Division Garrison in Enugu providing security support during the burial of the deceased.
“The Nigerian Army further assures the public that efforts to trace, identify, and apprehend the perpetrators responsible for the attack remain ongoing, and that they will be brought to justice once apprehended, in line with due process of law.
“The insinuations of internal sabotage, rivalry, or orchestrated attacks within the barracks are entirely unfounded and not supported by credible evidence. Such narratives are, therefore, misleading and should be disregarded.
While the loss of Corporal Ude Jude is deeply regrettable, the Headquarters 17 Brigade Nigerian Army reaffirms its commitment to the welfare of its personnel and the maintenance of professionalism.
“The public is urged to rely only on verified information from official military sources and to refrain from spreading unsubstantiated claims capable of undermining the integrity of the Nigerian Army”, the statement read.
