The Kebbi State Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress has congratulated Governor Nasir Idris and the people of Kebbi State on the administration’s third anniversary, describing the period as eventful and impactful.
In a statement issued on Sunday by the State NLC Chairman, Murtala Usman, the labour union commended the governor for what it described as remarkable achievements across key sectors of the state economy.
According to Usman, Governor Idris’ administration has recorded significant progress in infrastructure, education, healthcare and workers’ welfare since assuming office three years ago.
“The last three years of Governor Nasir Idris’ administration have been eventful and memorable. His government has demonstrated commitment to improving the lives of workers and the general populace through numerous developmental projects and policies,” he said.
The NLC chairman noted that the governor’s labour-friendly disposition informed the union’s decision to publicly acknowledge his efforts and encourage him to sustain the momentum.
“As a former unionist, Governor Idris has not disappointed workers. He fully implemented the N75,000 minimum wage for civil servants in Kebbi State and has maintained prompt payment of salaries, pensions and gratuities,” Usman stated.
He further praised the administration’s interventions in the health sector, including the construction and renovation of general hospitals across the state, as well as the recruitment of teachers to strengthen the education sector.
“The government has revitalised the healthcare sector through the construction and rehabilitation of hospitals. It has also boosted education through the employment of teachers and ended casualisation across ministries, departments and agencies,” he added.
Usman also commended the commissioning of the ultra-modern State Secretariat, describing it as a landmark achievement that has improved the working environment for civil servants.
He further lauded the state government for providing 50 buses to ease transportation challenges facing workers and residents.
“The provision of 50 buses has greatly reduced transportation difficulties for workers and the people of Kebbi State. Likewise, the recruitment of 2,000 teachers came at the right time and has strengthened the educational system,” he said.
Despite the commendations, the NLC chairman called on the state government to intensify efforts toward addressing housing challenges confronting civil servants.
“We urge the government to embark on the construction of affordable housing units to reduce the housing deficit in the state. Many civil servants are still facing serious housing challenges despite the existence of some housing estates,” Usman said.
He also advocated the inclusion of organised labour in housing allocation committees to ensure fairness and transparency.
“Organised labour should be represented in housing distribution committees. This will prevent situations where politicians dominate allocations while workers, who genuinely need the houses, are left out,” he added.
The NLC reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the rights and welfare of workers through constructive and lawful engagement with the state government.
“The Nigeria Labour Congress will continue to vigorously pursue and defend the rights and privileges of workers at all levels through dialogue and lawful engagements with the government,” Usman assured.
