The Enugu State Government and the Nigeria Police have taken action against a woman, Ogechi John, over alleged killing of her nine-year-old stepdaughter, Ogechi Amanda John.

John, said to be from Oderiko Community in Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, was arrested by Police operatives on Monday morning following the tragic incident, which reportedly occurred on Sunday at their residence in Nchatancha, Emene Area of Enugu metropolis.

According to neighbours, the deceased child allegedly died after being severely beaten by her stepmother around 3PM on Sunday.
Residents of the area further claimed that the late Amanda had allegedly suffered repeated maltreatment and abuse in the hands of the suspect prior to her death.
Reacting to the incident, Ngozi Enih, Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs and Social Development in Enugu State, condemned the alleged act and assured that the State Government would ensure justice is served.
She stated that the Administration of Governor Peter Mbah maintains zero tolerance for all forms of child abuse and violence against children.
“It is on record that the Governor Peter Mbah administration has zero tolerance for any form of child abuse, let alone child homicide. Immediately we received information about the incident, we moved swiftly to ensure the suspect was arrested,” she said.
The commissioner further disclosed that the Government would pursue a thorough and speedy investigation into the matter to guarantee that justice is delivered without delay.
“No one has the right to take another person’s life, especially that of a child, in Enugu State. We strongly condemn this unfortunate incident in its entirety,” Enih added.
Police Authorities are yet to release an official statement on the matter as investigations continue.
