Udo gave the commendation on Saturday during the commissioning of the newly reconstructed QIC Government Model Primary School, Oku, describing the project as a transformative intervention that would positively impact generations of pupils and residents of the community.
This was disclosed in a statement issued by his media team.
The school, originally established in 1914 by Qua Iboe Church missionaries, has undergone its first comprehensive reconstruction in more than a century.
The facility now boasts 19 modern classrooms, Information and Communication Technology facilities, a sickbay, administrative offices, staff quarters and other amenities designed to enhance teaching and learning.
Speaking at the ceremony, Udo, an alumnus of the institution and Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria in Akwa Ibom State, expressed gratitude to the governor for prioritising education.
“This school holds a special place in my heart, and I am deeply moved by what the governor has done here. Governor Umo Eno has demonstrated that quality education remains a top priority of his administration,” he said.
The council chairman pledged that the local government would take full ownership of the facility to ensure its sustainability and proper maintenance.
“We have approved the deployment of dedicated security personnel for the school and have also budgeted for lawn mowers to ensure proper maintenance of the premises. Our pupils should concentrate on learning and not engage in manual labour such as clearing grass with cutlasses,” Dr Udo stated.
He also used the occasion to relay the request of Oku Clan leaders for the establishment of a public secondary school in the community.
“The people of Oku are grateful for this model primary school, but they are also appealing to the governor to consider establishing a public secondary school here to provide continuity for pupils graduating from this institution,” he added.
Representing Governor Eno at the event, the Political Adviser to the Governor, Dr Godwin Ntukude, reiterated the administration’s commitment to delivering people-centred projects under the ARISE Agenda.
“Education remains a critical pillar of our development agenda because it is the foundation for sustainable growth and human capital development. The governor will continue to invest in projects that directly improve the lives of our people,” Ntukude said.
The Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ubong Umoh, described the project as a landmark achievement and noted that it marked the first comprehensive reconstruction of the school in over 100 years.
“This project is historic. With the improved infrastructure and the current teacher-to-pupil ratio of 1:25, we expect significant improvements in learning outcomes and overall educational standards,” Umoh said.
Other speakers at the event, including the Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board, Rt. Hon. Anietie Etuk, the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr Anieti Udofia, the Clan Head of Oku, Etebom Dr Enefiok Okpon, and members of the school management, praised Governor Eno for investing in the future of Akwa Ibom children through quality education.
The commissioning ceremony attracted members of the State Executive Council, officials of the Uyo Local Government Council, community leaders, stakeholders and residents.
