The Katsina State First Lady, Zulaihat Radda, has said no girl in the state should miss school due to menstruation, as she intensified efforts to promote menstrual hygiene and support girls’ education.

Radda stated this on Tuesday during the distribution of sanitary pads to schoolgirls under the Renewed Hope Initiative, an intervention led by Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu.

She explained that the programme targets challenges faced by girls, particularly in rural communities, who often skip classes due to a lack of access to sanitary products.
“As a society, we must ensure that no Katsina girl misses classes because of menstruation. Every girl deserves the opportunity to learn in a safe and supportive environment,” she said.
She disclosed that over 10,000 schoolgirls in the state would receive a year’s supply of disposable sanitary pads as part of a nationwide intervention targeting 370,000 beneficiaries.
According to her, the initiative goes beyond hygiene support to restoring confidence and tackling the stigma associated with menstruation.
She urged local government authorities, community leaders, and stakeholders to ensure transparency in distribution and called on corporate organisations and individuals to support the initiative.
The First Lady reaffirmed her commitment to empowering girls with the resources needed to pursue uninterrupted education.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Health, Musa Funtua, described the programme as a timely intervention to improve hygiene practices and the well-being of adolescent girls.
Also speaking, President of the Medical Women Association of Nigeria, Katsina Branch, Jamila Adam, said the initiative addresses critical challenges affecting schoolgirls, including limited awareness, poor access to sanitary products, and stigma.
She reiterated the association’s commitment to supporting programmes that promote the health and dignity of girls.
Menstrual hygiene remains a significant barrier to girls’ education in many parts of Nigeria, particularly in rural communities where access to sanitary products is limited and cultural stigma persists.
Studies have shown that many schoolgirls miss several days of classes each month due to a lack of menstrual products, inadequate sanitation facilities, and poor awareness.
