One of the most eagerly anticipated fixtures of the group stage initially struggled to ignite, but it exploded into life after the interval as both sides traded goals in an entertaining second half.
The Netherlands looked the more threatening side during a subdued opening period, with Donyell Malen repeatedly testing Japan goalkeeper Zion Suzuki, who produced three important saves to keep the score level.
Ronald Koeman’s men finally broke the deadlock six minutes after the restart. Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk rose highest to meet a pinpoint cross from club teammate Ryan Gravenberch, powering a header beyond Suzuki to give the Dutch a deserved lead.
Japan responded impressively and were back on level terms just six minutes later. Keito Nakamura’s powerful low drive proved too much for Dutch goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen, who could only watch as the ball found the back of the net.
The Dutch restored their advantage in the 64th minute through a moment of individual brilliance from Crysencio Summerville. The West Ham United forward cut inside from the left before unleashing a precise low strike beyond the outstretched arm of Suzuki.
Despite falling behind for a second time, Japan refused to surrender. Hajime Moriyasu’s side continued to push forward in search of another equaliser, buoyed by the passionate support of thousands of Japanese fans inside the stadium.
Their persistence paid off with just two minutes remaining. Koki Ogawa’s goal-bound effort was cleverly redirected by Kamada, whose subtle header wrong-footed Verbruggen and found the net to spark wild celebrations among the Samurai Blue supporters.
The late goal ensured Japan emerged with a valuable point from a difficult opening fixture, while the Netherlands were left frustrated after twice surrendering the lead in a contest that ultimately showcased the resilience and attacking quality of both sides.
