The 73rd General Church Council (GCC) of the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) has raised an alarm over worsening insecurity across Nigeria, describing the situation as tragic and unacceptable. The Council called for decisive and sustained government intervention to protect citizens.
In a communiqué issued at the end of the council meeting held at the ECWA International Headquarters in Jos, the Council expressed profound grief over the persistent loss of lives and destruction of property. The document was signed by the ECWA President, Dr Ayuba Bagat, and the General Secretary, Ayuba Asheshe. Calls for constitutional responsibility
“The Council expresses profound grief and strong concern over the continued loss of lives and destruction of property among its members as a result of persistent insecurity across the nation,” the communiqué stated. It further noted that these developments highlight escalating security challenges that threaten safety, particularly in vulnerable communities.
The Council called on all levels of government to intensify efforts to fulfil their constitutional responsibility of safeguarding lives and property through “sustained, intentional, and effective security interventions”. Leadership changes and administrative expansion
Beyond security concerns, the Council announced key leadership decisions, including the election of Chidi Madubuko as Vice-President, succeeding Sunday Ajise. The General Secretary, Ayuba Asheshe, was returned unopposed for a second term.
As part of efforts to strengthen administration and mission outreach, the Council approved the creation of three new District Church Councils on a two-year probationary period. This expansion brings the total number of districts to 100. Furthermore, a major development project at Garam, near Abuja, was endorsed, with members encouraged to support the initiative through structured crowdfunding. Institutional reforms and global engagement
In a significant move toward internal reform, the Council resolved to restructure the church for stronger global mission engagement. It also announced plans to pilot a centralised salary scheme for workers, scheduled to begin in January 2027.
Other highlights of the meeting included the commendation of Bingham University for its academic growth and the rebranding of ECWA Television to Bingham Television. The Council concluded by urging active participation in the 2027 general elections and calling for improved road infrastructure and unity across its branches nationwide.
