The Peoples Democratic Party gubernatorial candidate in Lagos State, Adedeji Doherty, has unveiled his ten point manifesto that aims at transforming Lagos into a global economic attraction, adding that the party has the capacity to beat the ruling All Progressive Congress APC in the state.
Doherty who is running for the Lagos gubernatorial office for the fifth time, said he contested the position as an aspirant was at the age of 38.
“I have been consistent with the party. I have not moved to another party or visited another party. I have moved up the ranks as the Financial Secretary of the Zone, the Organising Secretary of the Zone, the Acting Vice-Chairman of the Zone, the State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party in 2019, and then came back as the Deputy National Secretary of the party at the national level, and also finally the substantive National Vice-Chairman of the South-West Zone.”
Doherty , 64, said his greatest asset has been his ability to be consistent.
“So, I believe that in itself should sends a message of consistency, determination, forthrightness, pushfulness, hard work and belief, most importantly, in that adage that says God’s time is the best.”
The PDP gubernatorial candidate who is also banking on his popularity in Lagos, said ” we will challenge the sitting government in Lagos. Even though, yes, they might be in power, definitely, in my sojourn and my political journey in the State of Lagos, the Centre of Excellence, there will be no leader in any substantive party in Lagos State who will say they don’t know Engineer Adedeji Doherty.”
He promised to rally PDP members to play as a team, ahead of the 2027 elections.
” We’re going to play fair and square, and we’re going to bring out the things that we believe the people of Lagos State need. We’re going to focus on the youths that are coming after us and the environment.
“I’m a businessman. I’m an entrepreneur. I’m an industrialist. I have set up companies, I have failed in some, and I have come out victorious in quite a number of them. And this is a record and a testament that even the private sector will attest to”
Lagos State is the boiling point and also the economic hub of Nigeria.
Doherty who described Lagos State as the economic hub and the financial centre of the entire country, added that Lagos State is where the unity of Nigeria exposes itself, with about 20 to 25 million residents, Lagos State has close to about 13 million registered voters.
He promised to set the security architecture for the entire South-West Zone from Lagos, while also setting a new development agenda that will address infrastructure, human capital development, amongst others
“It’s going to be a 10-point agenda. An agenda that’s going to cover roads, education, health, housing, security, empowerment of youths, women, children and infants. It is going to cover water. It’s going to cover power.
“These are the areas that we’re going to focus on, and these are the areas where I believe that once we can bring down the price of power in Lagos State, then Lagos State will boom.
” We haven’t gotten a new university in the past 30 years; we haven’t gotten a new general hospital in the past 25 years. We haven’t gotten a well-articulated road network. We still have traffic jams at the same level we had 15 years ago, even with the Blue Rail, the Red Rail and all the rails.
“There are a lot of things that are still missing in the whole architecture of Lagos State that should complement and act as palliatives to whatever Mr President is doing.
“If there is no reciprocal support from Lagos in terms of agriculture, in terms of making sure that indigenous companies in Lagos State rise again, in terms of making sure that entrepreneurs and businessmen make money so that they can expand their businesses rather than overtax them, if all these areas are not attacked conclusively, then whatever Mr President is trying to do at the federal level will not reach the grassroots”
He berated the renewed hope agenda and the ongoing plans in Lagos, which he said are grossly inadequate to transform the state
” The primary healthcare is there. Where is it today? Where is it today? The educational system, the nursery and primary education, the training of teachers both locally and abroad, is not there. ” That is why right now I’m saying that my deputy governor is definitely going to have to be somebody from the educational sector, someone who has been a teacher, someone who is a Muslim, a lady or a man, someone who knows what is missing in building up the youth of tomorrow.
“Lagos State should be the state that everybody should look up to, no matter where you are.”
