Trevor Nelson Takes Break From BBC Radio 2 Over Health Concerns

Veteran broadcaster Trevor Nelson says he is focusing on recovery after stepping away from BBC Radio 2 for health reasons.

Veteran broadcaster Trevor Nelson has announced he is taking a temporary break from his BBC Radio 2 programme after undergoing medical tests, saying he is prioritising his health and recovery.

The long-serving BBC Radio 2 and Radio 1Xtra presenter revealed that he had been advised to undergo further medical examinations following a routine health check-up. Although he did not disclose the nature of his condition, Nelson urged the public to avoid speculation as he focuses on getting better.

Announcing the decision on Instagram, Nelson said: “Some of you may already have noticed that I’ve not been on my daily Radio 2 slot this week. After a routine check-up I was advised to have some follow up tests. As a result, I will be taking some further time off. As I’m sure you can appreciate with health issues, it’s important to deal with facts and not speculate.”

The broadcaster said his immediate priority is making a full recovery before returning to work.

He added. “So I’m concentrating on getting better, being back to 100% me and to getting back behind the mic and the decks.”

The announcement came just days after Nelson was honoured with a special award at the Television and Radio Industries Club (TRIC) Awards in recognition of his broadcasting career. Earlier this year, he also received the Judge’s Special Recognition Award at the Audio and Radio Industry Awards (ARIAs) and celebrated three decades with the BBC.

BBC Director of Music Lorna Clarke wished the presenter a speedy recovery and said the broadcaster looked forward to welcoming him back whenever he was ready.

She said. “Everyone at BBC Radio 2 and BBC Radio 1Xtra wishes Trevor a very speedy recovery and we all look forward to him returning to his shows whenever he is ready.”

The announcement prompted an outpouring of support from fellow broadcasters and entertainers, including Stormzy, Mel B, Beverley Knight, Jools Holland and Alesha Dixon.

Singer Beverley Knight wrote: “Health. First and always,” while Corinne Bailey Rae added: “Well done for listening to your body.”

BBC Radio presenter Lauren Laverne also offered words of encouragement, writing: “Sending lots of love and keeping everything crossed for you. I know how that can feel – take it one step at a time and try not to jump ahead.”

BBC Radio 2 presenter Vernon Kay also paid tribute during his programme, saying: “Everyone at BBC Radio 2 are sending Trevor all the very very best wishes, we absolutely love him to bits I know that this challenge is something that Trevor is gonna face head on.”

Clara Amfo will present Nelson’s weekday Radio 2 programme next week before DJ Spoony takes over from July 6 until further notice. Listeners will still hear Nelson host the pre-recorded The Music is Black concert on BBC Radio 2 on Sunday.
