Chinenyeze, a Lagos-based Senior Product Designer, has built a career around simplifying complex digital experiences in sectors ranging from compliance and healthcare to government services and artificial intelligence. His work focuses on understanding user challenges, aligning business goals with customer needs, and developing solutions that improve how people interact with technology.
“Africa is culturally diverse, and in a country like Nigeria with over 250 ethnic groups, hundreds of languages, and major differences in internet access, device capability and digital literacy, product design has to ensure inclusion and accessibility from day one,” Chinenyeze said in an interview.
His journey into technology followed an unconventional path. A graduate of Chemical Engineering from the Federal University of Technology, Minna, Chinenyeze said his engineering background gave him the systems-thinking approach that later became central to his design career.
“Engineering taught me how systems behave, where they break and how to understand problems before attempting to fix them. Design became the place where I could combine problem-solving with something more human,” he said.
The transition from engineering to product design began with a product design internship at Harvoxx Tech Hub before he moved on to work on projects including SecureMyID, an identity verification platform, ReachDoc, a virtual healthcare service, and SMEDAN IMSME, a national platform connecting Nigerian small businesses with financing opportunities and larger markets.
His experience later led him to Norebase, where he served as Senior Product Designer and led the redesign of AutoComply, a compliance automation platform. According to Chinenyeze, the redesign transformed the product from a minimum viable product into a scalable platform with its own design system, reducing the time businesses spent on compliance-related tasks by about 30 percent.
Demand for skilled product designers is growing across Africa as companies increasingly compete on user experience rather than simply offering digital services. The rise of fintech, e-commerce, health technology and AI-powered platforms has created a need for professionals who can bridge technical complexity and user needs.
For Chinenyeze, the impact of design extends beyond corporate products to public service delivery.
He was part of a team of designers, developers and public-sector stakeholders that contributed to Nigeria’s Web Design Standards (NWDS), an initiative led by the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy to create more unified, accessible and citizen-focused government websites.
The initiative seeks to improve how Nigerians interact with public services online while advancing digital inclusion across the country.
“I have seen how good design can help businesses understand regulatory obligations and access opportunities that would otherwise seem too complex,” he said.
Beyond commercial projects, community engagement has remained a central part of his career. He has mentored more than 300 designers through programmes including Techrity and Mently, contributed to open-source initiatives and spoken at technology conferences such as DevFest Ajah and the Untitled Designers Conference, where he discussed ethical design practices.
His contributions earned him Techrity’s Digital Inclusion Advocate of the Year award.
Chinenyeze is also the creator of “Finessing UX Design Presentations,” a widely used independent Figma Slides template, and the author of “The Lazy Designer’s Guide to Documentation,” resources designed to help younger designers improve communication and workflow practices.
Despite growing opportunities in Africa’s digital economy, he said the profession still faces challenges, particularly for young people seeking to enter technology careers from non-traditional backgrounds.
“The educational system in many African countries is still catching up with technology and creative fields. I had to treat my transition into design as a transfer of skills rather than a complete career change,” he said.
He also pointed to the challenge of working in highly regulated industries such as compliance, identity management and financial technology, where designers must understand legal, technical and business requirements alongside user needs.
Looking ahead, Chinenyeze believes Africa’s next generation of designers must focus on solving complex, high-impact problems rather than chasing trends.
“Learn to think in processes and systems, not just screens. Some of the most valuable design problems are in compliance, healthcare and enterprise systems. They may not look glamorous, but that’s where designers can create real value and long-term impact,” he advised.
As African governments and businesses accelerate digital transformation efforts, professionals like Chinenyeze are helping shape how millions of people experience technology, proving that design is becoming as critical to innovation as software development itself.
