According to the letter of agreement obtained by The PUNCH on Monday, the decision was reached after what the aspirants described as extensive and cordial deliberations held at the Maitama residence of former Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki.
The letter noted that the aspirants resolved to prioritise the party’s overall success above personal ambitions.
It reads: “We, the undersigned members of the Peoples Democratic Party in Kwara State, who have expressed interest in contesting the party’s gubernatorial ticket for the 2027 election… hereby resolve that the overall interest of the party and its success are more important than our individual ambitions.
“To avoid unnecessary division, conserve time and resources, strengthen party unity, and enter the campaign season as one cohesive team, we have agreed to recommend a consensus arrangement for the selection of the party’s gubernatorial candidate.
“We jointly affirm our commitment to accept the decision of the party leadership, and we pledge our full support to whoever emerges as the party’s gubernatorial flagbearer.”
The letter further disclosed that consultations had already commenced with supporters across the state.
Confirming the authenticity of the document, the party’s spokesperson, Olusegun Adewara, described it as genuine, signalling official recognition of the consensus push within the Kwara PDP.
The adoption of a consensus model is expected to significantly alter the trajectory of the party’s build-up to the 2027 elections in Kwara State, potentially reducing the likelihood of divisive primaries that have historically weakened opposition parties in the state.
