The victory completed a remarkable progression for the Nigerian thrower, who won silver at the Gold Coast 2018 Games before finishing fourth at Birmingham 2022.
Enekwechi edged New Zealand’s Tom Walsh, who settled for silver with a best of 21.03m, while England’s Scott Lincoln claimed bronze after recording 20.99m in one of the closest field-event contests of the championships.
World record holder Tobi Amusan battled to a bronze medal in the women’s 100m hurdles after clipping a hurdle, disrupting her rhythm in the final.
The Nigerian crossed the line in 12.60 seconds, finishing behind Bahamas’ Devynne Charlton, who won gold in 12.33 seconds, and Jamaica’s Megan Simmons, who claimed silver in 12.41 seconds.
Amusan had looked set to dominate after storming to victory in her heat in a wind-assisted 12.19 seconds, the fastest time ever recorded in Commonwealth Games history. However, a mistake in the final denied her a shot at gold as she settled for a place on the podium.
Nigeria continued its impressive showing on the track as Samuel Ogazi produced one of the standout performances of the championships in the men’s 400m semi-finals.
Ogazi stormed to victory in 44.52 seconds, setting the fastest 400m semifinal ever recorded at the Commonwealth Games.
Team Nigeria will also have a second representative in the men’s 400m final after Edidiong Udo was upgraded from third to second place in his semifinal following the disqualification of Jamaica’s Antonio Watson. Udo had originally clocked 45.55 seconds.
In the men’s 200m, Udodi Onwuzurike booked his place in the final after finishing second in his semifinal in 20.22 seconds, just behind Jamaica’s Christopher Taylor, who won in 20.20 seconds.
Attention will now turn to the women’s 400m final, where Ella Onojuvwevwo enters as one of Nigeria’s strongest medal prospects. Her personal best of 49.47 seconds ranks her among the world’s fastest quarter-milers this season.
In the decathlon, Jami Schlueter remains firmly in medal contention after a solid opening day. The Nigerian sits fourth overall with 4,196 points following strong performances in the 100m, long jump, shot put, high jump and 400m.
Elsewhere, Unyima Uwak finished fifth in the women’s T47 100m final, clocking a season’s best 12.63 seconds.
With Enekwechi delivering a historic gold medal, Amusan returning to the podium and several athletes advancing to finals, Team Nigeria heads into the closing stages of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games with growing momentum and hopes of adding more medals to its tally.
