A woman has died after falling from an abandoned bridge during a rope-jumping activity in Brazil. Police have arrested three men and opened an investigation into the incident.
The victim, Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas, was taking part in the activity at Ponte do Esqueleto, known as Skeleton Bridge, in São Paulo state. Video from the scene shows her being taken to the edge of the bridge before the fall. Emergency workers later confirmed her death.
Authorities are examining whether those involved failed to follow safety procedures. Investigators are looking into whether the men knowingly exposed the woman to a serious risk that led to her death.
Footage shared online shows three men handling Rodrigues de Freitas before she left the bridge. As she fell, a person nearby can be heard shouting that her rope had not been attached.
The three men were wearing harnesses linked to safety lines. Local officials said they were connected to a company that organised rope-jumping activities, although some reports suggest they may have been part of informal groups involved in the sport.
Rodrigues de Freitas was buried shortly after the incident.
Rope-jumping differs from bungee jumping. Participants use climbing ropes that turn a fall into a swinging motion, while bungee jumping uses an elastic cord that stretches and rebounds.
The bridge has been abandoned for years and falls under federal responsibility. Brazil’s Secretariat of Federal Assets said it was “available to assist the authorities in the investigations”.
The Limeira city government said it plans to take legal action against the federal government over the condition and management of the bridge. In a statement, it said it had been “adopting administrative measures and demanding action from the federal agencies responsible for the area”.
The city government also said Rodrigues de Freitas’ death “makes the continuation of this omission unsustainable and unacceptable”.
Police are continuing their investigation.
