The Lagos concert, originally scheduled for December 22 as part of her African tour dates alongside Cape Town and Johannesburg, was quietly removed from the tour schedule. As of press time, neither Tyla nor her management had publicly explained the decision, leaving fans and industry stakeholders to draw their own conclusions.
The cancellation follows sustained opposition from some Nigerian public figures, influencers and social media users who argued that hosting the South African singer at a time of renewed outrage over the treatment of Nigerians in South Africa would send the wrong message.
Content creator Solomon Buchi was among the earliest voices to oppose the concert, insisting that “the show must not happen” unless there was some acknowledgement of the plight of Nigerians facing xenophobic attacks. Social media activist VeryDarkMan also warned promoters against staging the event, saying the concert “is not happening” and threatening resistance if organisers attempted to proceed.
Others, including activist Omoyele Sowore, rejected the boycott campaign, arguing that artists should not be held responsible for the actions of governments or citizens. Sowore maintained that political frustrations should be directed at elected leaders rather than musicians and insisted that the concert should proceed.
Although no official reason has been given for the cancellation, the decision comes after weeks of online debate that increasingly shifted attention away from the music itself and towards wider diplomatic tensions between Africa’s two largest entertainment markets.
The cancellation also represents a commercial setback for what would have been Tyla’s first headline concert in Nigeria.
Detty December has become the busiest period for Nigeria’s live entertainment industry, with Lagos hosting dozens of concerts that attract local audiences, returning diaspora visitors and international tourists. Depending on venue size and ticket pricing, headline concerts during the festive season can generate hundreds of millions of naira in ticket sales before sponsorships, hospitality packages and merchandise are considered.
Industry estimates suggest that a successful headline concert by an artist of Tyla’s profile could have generated between several hundred million naira and well above one billion naira in gross ticket revenue, depending on venue capacity and pricing strategy.
Beyond ticket income, promoters typically commit significant resources months before an event is announced, including venue deposits, artist guarantees, production contracts, marketing campaigns, accommodation, logistics and security arrangements. Where cancellations occur after commercial agreements have been signed, promoters often bear a substantial share of the financial exposure unless contracts provide otherwise.
Speaking with BusinessDay before the cancellation, live events executive Adeola said the situation reflected the reality that entertainment businesses do not operate in isolation from politics and public sentiment.
“You can have a great business idea, but timing and external factors matter. It is almost like trying to organise a party during a conflict. Even if discussions with the artist started months earlier, circumstances changed and people were always going to push back.”
Adeola said she understood why many Nigerians supported a boycott, while cautioning against directing personal attacks at the artist.
“I see the boycott as a form of protest rather than an attack on Tyla herself. People are trying to communicate that they are unhappy with what is happening in South Africa. The message should be about solidarity, not hostility towards one individual.”
She argued that proceeding with the concert without addressing public concerns would have been difficult.
For now, Tyla’s silence has left room for speculation rather than certainty. Whether the cancellation was driven by security concerns, commercial considerations, reputational risk or ongoing discussions behind the scenes remains unknown.
What is clear is that one of the continent’s most anticipated Detty December concerts will no longer take place, underscoring how politics, public opinion and business have become increasingly intertwined in Africa’s fast-growing live entertainment industry.
