Members of the Lions Clubs International have concluded their 19th Multiple District Convention in Asaba, Delta State capital, setting agenda for the empowerment of vulnerable people in the Niger Delta region, among other resolutions.

With the theme, ‘Building Bridges of Service and Unity’, the convention, which attracted participants from across Nigeria, as well as government officials, traditional rulers, corporate partners, and other stakeholders, featured leadership sessions, humanitarian discussions, policy deliberations, and community-focused initiatives, including childhood cancer support programmes.

The newly elected Second Vice District Governor of the Lions Clubs International, Dora Adebayo, while delivering her post-election victory speech at the convention, which climaxed last Saturday, pledged to “give special attention to supporting members and vulnerable people in the Niger Delta communities through programmes aimed at improving livelihoods and promoting self-reliance”.
She also promised to serve with “dedication and humility,” emphasising that her administration would focus on empowerment, unity, and humanitarian service.
Adebayo had emerged victorious at the election after polling 75 votes to defeat her opponent, Lion Olore Evelyn Imokhe, who secured 32 votes, while the election analysis released after the exercise showed that the total number of registered voters was 119, with 114 delegates accredited to vote.
According to the result, a total of 115 votes were cast, with 107 valid votes and eight rejected votes recorded. Five delegates were absent.
Adebayo expressed gratitude to members of the organisation for the confidence reposed in her leadership.
According to her, “the outcome of the election reflected the unity and shared vision among members of the organisation”.
The newly elected official also emphasised the need for stronger collaboration among members, noting that unity remained essential for the growth and success of the organisation.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the Nomination and Election Committee and Past District Governor of Lions Clubs International, Lion Patricia Udeme, described the election as peaceful, transparent, and credible.
Udeme noted that while all contestants were qualified leaders, delegates eventually elected the candidate they considered best suited for the position, adding that the successful candidate would officially assume office in July.
