China’s commerce ministry on Thursday called on the British government to uphold market principles and respect company decisions as London considers taking full control of British Steel from its Chinese owner, Jingye
The British government assumed operational control of British Steel from Jingye in April 2025 and Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced on Monday that the company could eventually be fully nationalised.
Beijing said it was closely monitoring the situation and pledged to “take strong measures to safeguard the legitimate rights of Chinese companies,” according to a statement from the commerce ministry.
Chinese officials also called on Britain to handle the matter cautiously and avoid actions that could undermine investor confidence or disrupt normal market operations.
The British government did not immediately issue a response to a Reuters request for comment.
