Laja Adeoye, the Lagos State governorship candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), has called on Nigeria’s political leaders to embrace the ideals of Herbert Heelas Macaulay, saying the country’s democracy requires principled leadership, strategic collaboration and commitment to the national interest ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Adeoye made the call on the occasion of the 80th remembrance ceremony of Herbert Macaulay held in Lagos on Sunday, where he described the late nationalist as a towering figure whose legacy continues to shape Nigeria’s democratic journey.
In a statement on Sunday, the APM governorship candidate said Macaulay’s life remains a powerful reminder that leadership should be rooted in service, courage and an unwavering commitment to the welfare of the people.
According to him, Macaulay’s contributions extended beyond partisan politics to include advocacy for constitutional reforms, press freedom and greater participation of indigenous Nigerians in governance during the colonial era.
“A trailblazer in every sense, his bold activism against colonial rule, tireless advocacy for the rights of Nigerians and visionary leadership laid critical foundations for the independence movement that would eventually birth our nation,” Adeoye said.
Adeoye argued that the remembrance came at a critical period in Nigeria’s democratic development, with the country confronting economic difficulties, institutional challenges and growing demands for accountable governance.
He said such moments provide an opportunity for reflection on the sacrifices of the country’s founding nationalists.
The governorship candidate urged political actors to draw lessons from Macaulay’s example as preparations gradually gather pace for the 2027 elections.
“As we approach future electoral cycles, including the critical 2027 polls, the spirit of Herbert Macaulay calls on all political actors to prioritise unity, strategic collaboration and genuine service to the people,” he added.
Adeoye maintained that although Macaulay died eight decades ago, his ideals of freedom, justice and democratic participation remain relevant to contemporary Nigeria.
