PDP chieftain Sani says Goodluck Jonathan’s reported reluctance to contest, should not rule out a possible 2027 presidential bid.
PDP chieftain Umar Sani has dismissed suggestions that former President Goodluck Jonathan’s reported reluctance to contest the 2027 presidential election diminishes his prospects, arguing that several Nigerian leaders initially showed hesitation before eventually accepting leadership responsibilities.
Speaking during an interview on ARISE News, Sani said political reluctance has historically not prevented individuals from assuming the nation’s highest office.
“Political reluctance has never stopped leaders from emerging,” he said.
According to Sani, Nigeria’s political history contains several examples of leaders who initially appeared unwilling to seek office but later accepted national assignments.
“When Obasanjo was asked to succeed Murtala Mohammed, he reluctantly accepted and became president,” he stated.
Sani also recalled former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s return to politics in 1999, arguing that he did not actively pursue the presidency at the time.
“Obasanjo’s 1999 comeback was also with reluctance,” he said.
According to him, leadership opportunities sometimes arise through national consensus rather than personal ambition.
“He was called upon to serve,” he stated.
Sani maintained that the focus should not be on whether Jonathan appears reluctant but on whether he remains constitutionally and politically qualified to contest.
“The issue of whether Jonathan is reluctant does not arise,” he said.
He stated that Jonathan has previously served as president and remains a significant figure in Nigeria’s political landscape.
“Jonathan has been a president before,” he stated.
According to Sani, ongoing discussions about Jonathan’s possible candidacy should be viewed within the context of his experience and continued relevance in national politics.
“There is an eligibility case on him,” he said while referencing legal debates that have surrounded Jonathan’s political future.
Sani stated that recent court decisions have strengthened arguments in favour of Jonathan’s eligibility.
“The court has dismissed the case,” he stated.
He emphasized that attention should now shift from speculation about Jonathan’s willingness to contest toward broader political considerations surrounding the 2027 election.
Sani concluded that political reluctance has never been a barrier to leadership emergence in Nigeria, arguing that Goodluck Jonathan’s reported hesitation should not be interpreted as evidence that he cannot or will not participate in future presidential contests.
