The Nigeria-South Africa Chamber of Commerce has called for calm and constructive dialogue following renewed unrest in parts of South Africa that has unsettled communities, disrupted businesses, and raised concerns among foreign nationals, including Nigerians.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the chamber said the violence was not only affecting migrant communities and livelihoods but was also creating uncertainty for South African businesses and the wider investment climate.
“The recent unrest is deeply concerning, and its impact is being felt across communities, businesses, and families,” the chamber said. “We are especially mindful of the effect on members of the Nigerian community and other African nationals, while also recognising the pressure this places on South African enterprises and economic stability.”
The chamber stressed that Nigeria and South Africa have for decades maintained one of Africa’s most important bilateral relationships, built on trade, diplomacy, and a shared commitment to the continent’s growth.
It added that the relationship between both nations “has long been anchored on mutual respect, cooperation and a common vision for African prosperity”, warning that tensions should not be allowed to undermine those foundations.
The chamber urged government authorities, community leaders, civil society groups, and citizens to prioritise peaceful dialogue and uphold the rule of law.
“Ensuring the safety and protection of all residents, regardless of nationality, is essential to maintaining trust, stability, and social cohesion,” it said. The organisation also called for stronger cooperation between Nigerian and South African authorities to prevent further escalation and address the underlying issues fuelling recurring tensions.
“The focus now should be on collaboration, conflict resolution, and rebuilding confidence among communities and investors alike,” the statement added.
The chamber said it remained committed to promoting unity, economic resilience, and stronger partnerships between both countries despite the current tensions.
“Our thoughts are with everyone affected,” it said. “This is a moment for both nations to reaffirm the shared opportunities and common interests that continue to bind Nigeria and South Africa together.”
