Artificial intelligence has redefined what it takes to be an effective leader, with organisations now placing greater emphasis on adaptability, human judgment and continuous learning over traditional management skills, according to a new analysis published by the World Economic Forum (WEF).

The report argues that while AI is automating routine tasks and accelerating decision-making, it is simultaneously increasing the value of uniquely human capabilities such as critical thinking, emotional intelligence, collaboration and ethical leadership.

According to the WEF, the rise of AI is changing the role of business leaders. Rather than focusing primarily on operational oversight, executives are expected to guide organisational transformation, foster innovation and help employees work effectively alongside AI systems.
The organisation noted that leadership in the AI era requires a shift from managing people to enabling them. This includes creating environments where employees can continuously learn new skills, experiment with AI tools responsibly and adapt to rapidly changing business needs.
The report noted that organisations must rethink workforce development. Instead of viewing upskilling as a one-time initiative, companies are encouraged to build continuous learning into everyday work.
Employees need access to AI literacy training, opportunities to develop problem-solving capabilities and pathways to transition into evolving roles as automation changes job requirements, WEF stated.
The WEF also highlighted that leadership skills are evolving beyond technical expertise. Future leaders will need stronger communication, strategic thinking and decision-making abilities to balance AI-generated insights with human judgment.
They will also be expected to ensure that AI is deployed responsibly, transparently and ethically.
LinkedIn’s Work Change Report, referenced by the WEF, found that professionals are now more than twice as likely to add AI skills to their profiles compared with 2018.
AI literacy has become a key differentiator in hiring, while demand for human-centric skills continues to rise.
The WEF analysis also warns that organisations risk creating future leadership shortages if they fail to redesign entry-level roles.
As AI automates many of the routine tasks traditionally performed by junior employees, companies must intentionally create opportunities for workers to develop analytical, decision-making and leadership capabilities that have historically been gained through experience.
To prepare for the shift, the WEF recommends that organisations establish clear skills frameworks, redesign roles around AI-enabled work and embed learning into career progression.
Leaders are also encouraged to prioritise responsible AI governance because ensuring human oversight remains central even as intelligent systems become more integrated into business operations.
The report stated that the organisations most likely to succeed in the AI era will not simply adopt new technologies, but will invest equally in developing people.
As AI continues to reshape industries, competitive advantage will depend on leaders who can combine technological understanding with empathy, adaptability and sound judgment.
