Real Madrid have confirmed the signing of Spain international Marc Cucurella from Chelsea on a contract running until 2032, making the left-back the club’s first arrival of the summer transfer window.
While Madrid did not disclose the transfer fee, sources told ESPN the deal is worth an initial €55 million, with a further €5 million in performance-related add-ons.
The 27-year-old joins shortly after José Mourinho was appointed as Madrid’s new head coach following Álvaro Arbeloa’s departure. Mourinho is understood to have played a key role in securing Cucurella’s signature.
Cucurella arrives after three seasons at Chelsea, where he made 163 appearances and helped the club win the UEFA Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup. The defender had attracted interest from both Barcelona and Atlético Madrid, but Real Madrid moved quickly to complete the transfer.
A product of Barcelona’s La Masia academy, Cucurella spent time with Eibar and Getafe before earning moves to Brighton & Hove Albion and later Chelsea in 2022. His switch to Madrid adds a fresh storyline to next season’s Clásico encounters given his Catalan roots and Barcelona background.
With his club future settled, Cucurella will now turn his attention to Spain’s World Cup campaign in the United States, where he is expected to remain the team’s first-choice left-back. He was a key member of Spain’s Euro 2024-winning squad and is set to play an important role as La Roja begin their bid for World Cup glory.
