Speaking during his analysis on SuperSport, Troost-Ekong reserved particular praise for the young centre-back, singling him out above all others in the South African squad.
“I think it says a lot to say that Mbokazi was the best player on the South Africa side. I think Okon also spent a lot of time on the ball,” he said.
Troost-Ekong also suggested that South Africa’s cautious second-half approach ultimately proved costly, with Bafana Bafana growing more adventurous in the final 30 minutes but falling just short of finding the breakthrough they needed.
“I think in the second half there were opportunities towards the last half hour; they opened up to be a little more attacking-minded. They were waiting to see what would happen in extra time and I think that cost them today,” he said.
The former Nigeria international also pointed to Mbokazi’s move from Orlando Pirates to Chicago Fire FC during the winter transfer window as a key factor in the defender’s development, arguing that regular exposure to MLS football ahead of a World Cup year had sharpened him considerably.
“The step-up for him to the MLS has helped to continue his development in a year that is a World Cup year. It makes sure that he is playing and I think after this tournament, he can look back and see this is what he learned,” Troost-Ekong said.
