Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NiDCOM, said the commission was concerned about the situation and was engaging relevant stakeholders to safeguard the welfare of Nigerians in the diaspora.
According to her, periods of tension within communities should not be allowed to create divisions among residents.
“Whenever communities experience moments of tension, it is important that we do not allow isolated incidents to divide us, but rather strengthen our commitment to peace, dialogue, and mutual respect,” she said.
The position of the commission was conveyed in a statement issued on Wednesday by Abdur-Rahman Balogun, NiDCOM’s Director of Media, Public Relations and Protocols.
The commission expressed sympathy with individuals and families affected by the disturbances and stressed the need for restraint, understanding, and respect for law and order during the sensitive period.
NiDCOM also acknowledged the efforts of community leaders and organisations working to promote peace, unity, and responsible engagement among different groups in Northern Ireland.
According to the commission, appeals by community stakeholders for cooperation with law enforcement authorities and efforts aimed at discouraging division within the community have been encouraging.
The commission specifically referenced comments made during a recent interview with the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) by Jahswill Emmanuel, Nigerian community leader, who expressed sadness over the unrest and extended condolences to victims and their families.
Emmanuel, founder of the Multi-Ethnic Sports and Cultures Northern Ireland (MSCNI), reportedly called on residents to support those affected while working collectively to preserve peace and stability.
He noted that migrant communities, including Nigerians, remained committed to making positive contributions to Northern Ireland and should continue to promote peaceful coexistence despite the current challenges.
According to him, isolated incidents should not be allowed to create divisions among communities.
He also stressed the importance of working closely with security agencies and sharing responsibility for preventing further escalation of tensions.
Reaffirming its commitment to the safety, dignity, and welfare of Nigerians living abroad, NiDCOM urged residents to refrain from inflammatory statements or actions capable of aggravating the situation.
The commission further called on Nigerians and other residents in Belfast to continue promoting dialogue, mutual understanding, and respect for one another, while remaining vigilant and cooperative with authorities.
NiDCOM stated that it would engage with relevant stakeholders to ensure the protection and well-being of Nigerians residing in Northern Ireland.
