SpaceX plans orbital AI data centers on Elon Musk’s space-based computing push

SpaceX is moving closer to a futuristic plan to build data centers in space, as Elon Musk’s company looks to expand its role in the artificial intelligence industry.

The company is developing a new generation of AI-powered satellites designed to operate as orbital data centers, using solar energy to power advanced computing systems while processing AI workloads above Earth.

The project is based on the idea that space could provide advantages over traditional data centers on Earth, including access to constant solar power and the ability to release excess heat directly into space.

Reports say the technology could help meet the enormous energy demands created by the growth of artificial intelligence.

SpaceX has proposed launching a massive satellite network that could eventually include up to one million spacecraft, creating what the company describes as an ‘orbital data center’ system for AI, machine learning, and other computing applications.

Musk said the project relies heavily on technology SpaceX has already developed through its Starlink satellite program, arguing that the engineering challenge is manageable because many of the required systems already exist.
