He said, “Nigerian society is no longer celebrating academic excellence. It’s not even Yahoo culture anymore; now we have a ‘Peller culture.’ This ‘Olodo’ uprising we are witnessing is terrible. It feels like we are trying so hard to accommodate ignorance so people won’t feel bad, and now they seem to be the majority. The massive attack on Nigeria’s educational system is alarming, aside from kidnappings and Boko Haram attacks.”
The remarks, in which he referenced popular TikTok streamer, Peller, as a symbol of the trend, quickly went viral, dividing social media users. While some praised Ycee for “speaking facts,” others accused him of attacking a young content creator who has found success despite systemic challenges.
Peller responded shortly after, dismissing the criticism and questioning the behaviour of some industry veterans.
He said, “Some OGs don’t deserve respect. This Ycee guy should look at what an elderly man is saying. You people who bring music promotions to so-called ‘olodos’ are the same ones promoting them.”
Peller’s partner, Jarvis, also defended him in a video response, shifting attention to broader economic realities affecting young Nigerians.
She said, “I’m a graduate. Since the government didn’t provide jobs for us, what exactly did you expect people to do? You can’t expect individuals with high intelligence to end up cleaning toilets. Some, unfortunately, are pushed into crimes like kidnapping and armed robbery.”
The debate has since intensified across platforms, with many users arguing that the issue goes beyond Peller as an individual and reflects deeper systemic failures.
Media personality, Daddy Freeze, also weighed in, arguing that while an “olodo culture” may exist, it was unfair to single out Peller.
He said, “So do we have an olodo culture? Absolutely. But I find it unfair to put the blame on Peller, who is an intelligent young man that took advantage of a broken system. He didn’t break the system.”
He further criticised Nigeria’s economic realities, comparing educational rewards with entertainment earnings.
“Don’t blame Peller. Don’t blame Big Brother. Blame the fact that the government was so incompetent. You finish school as the best graduating student and get N10,000. What will you aim for: best graduating student or Big Brother’s N100m,” he added.
Davido’s manager and music executive, Asa Asika, appeared to back Ycee’s stance, posting “Olodo uprising” on X alongside a shout-out to the rapper.
Singer, Portable, however, defended Peller, questioning the criticism directed at him.
“Instead of you to beg God for grace, you are insulting Peller that he didn’t go to school. You that went to school, how many cars do you have?” he said in a video that has since circulated online.
The debate continues to generate reactions across social media, with opinions sharply divided over education, success, and Nigeria’s socio-economic realities.
