The Kwankwasiyya Movement has praised aspirants who stepped down or accepted the outcome of its consensus candidate selection process, describing their conduct as a demonstration of political maturity and a key factor in strengthening the movement’s preparations for the forthcoming elections in Kano State.
In a statement issued on Saturday by the movement’s spokesperson, Habibu Sale Mohammed, the group said the willingness of aspirants to subordinate personal ambitions to collective interests had reinforced its reputation as one of Nigeria’s most disciplined political platforms.
The commendation comes as the movement intensifies efforts to consolidate support for candidates of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the next electoral cycle. According to the statement, the consensus process covered aspirants seeking tickets for the governorship, Senate, House of Representatives and State House of Assembly seats.
The movement singled out Senator Rufa’i Sani Hanga for what it described as exemplary statesmanship after he stepped aside in support of the emergence of former Kano State Deputy Governor, Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, as the consensus candidate for the senatorial seat.
It also applauded former Kano State Governor and ex-Senator, Kabiru Ibrahim Gaya, for accepting the decision that produced former President of the Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO), Nasir Batayya, as the senatorial candidate for Kano South. The statement noted that several other aspirants across the state either relinquished their ambitions or accepted alternative responsibilities to preserve the unity of the movement.
“The strength of any political movement lies not only in its ability to produce candidates but also in the willingness of its members to place collective interests above personal ambitions,” the statement said.
The movement further congratulated all candidates who emerged through the consensus arrangement, with particular emphasis on the emergence of Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo as the NDC governorship candidate.
It described Gwarzo’s emergence as a reflection of the confidence reposed in him by the leadership and members of the movement.
The group also extended congratulations to its senatorial, House of Representatives and State Assembly candidates, stressing that their nominations come with significant responsibilities.
The statement urged the candidates to see themselves not merely as contestants for public office but as ambassadors of the Kwankwasiyya Movement and custodians of its ideals.
It charged them to conduct issue-based campaigns and demonstrate humility, discipline, integrity and commitment to good governance, social justice, accountability and service to the people. The movement said the confidence placed in the candidates must be justified through responsible leadership and sustained engagement with voters.
As political activities gather momentum across Kano, the Kwankwasiyya Movement called on its members and supporters to remain united and focused on securing electoral victories for the NDC.
It added that the spirit of sacrifice and discipline displayed during the consensus process should continue to guide members as the movement seeks to expand its political influence and deliver what it described as people-oriented leadership in the state.
The statement concluded that unity and adherence to the movement’s principles would remain critical to its electoral success and long-term political objectives in Kano.
