A 70-year-old former miner-turned-goalkeeper, Ángel Mateos González, is set to make history this weekend after being named in the squad for CD Colunga in the Tercera Federación.

If he takes to the field against Praviano, Mateos will reportedly become the oldest player ever to appear in an official competitive match in Spain.
As reported by BBC Sport on Wednesday, the Asturian club said his inclusion is intended as a tribute rather than a pursuit of records, highlighting his long-standing contribution to football both on and off the pitch.
“This is neither a record nor an oddity. It is a tribute. Mateos represents passion, consistency, respect for football and a way of living the sport that goes beyond age, “ the club said on social media.
Mateos, who originally retired from competitive football at 43, has remained active in the game through veteran football and local teams, including the Hunosa company side and Turón veterans. He has also been assisting Colunga’s goalkeepers this season, offering experience and informal coaching support.
Despite his age, Mateos insists he still feels capable of playing if required.
“I still feel agile,” he told local media, adding that he has continued playing regularly in veteran and amateur competitions. He also reflected on how the game has changed since his early days, recalling rougher pitches and basic playing conditions compared to modern football.
Colunga currently sit 10th in the 18-team league, with little at stake in the final two fixtures of the season—safe from relegation but out of promotion contention—making the occasion largely symbolic.
