The Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, on Monday said he had summoned an emergency security council meeting to address the recent wave of attacks in the state.

The governor said the meeting was convened “in view of the latest attacks and destruction of public properties by suspected thugs of the All Progressives Congress.”

A statement by the governor’s spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, said, “The meeting to be held today at the Governor’s Office is to be attended by all the service commanders, with a focus on tackling the menace of thuggery by the APC hoodlums.”
Quoting the governor, the statement further read, “I summon this emergency meeting to address this matter of urgent public importance. We must question why hoodlums attack public properties while law enforcement agents refuse to make arrests or prevent such threats to public peace.
“The security council is to fashion out a containment strategy to prevent future occurrence. We have a sacred duty to sustain the confidence of the public in the security agencies.”
Political tension ahead of the August 15 governorship election in Osun State intensified last Friday as the All Progressives Congress and the Accord Party exchanged accusations over the destruction of campaign billboards across parts of the state.
The Imole Campaign Council, leading the re-election bid of Governor Adeleke, accused hoodlums allegedly working for the APC of vandalising campaign billboards belonging to the governor’s campaign organisation and the Accord Party.
However, the Head of Media and Publicity Committee of the Osun APC Governorship Campaign Council, Oluremi Omowaiye, described the allegations as false and politically motivated.
