The veteran actor made the remark in Asaba, Delta State, on Wednesday on X while reacting to a disturbing video of the incident shared by activist Harrison Gwamnishu.
Kanayo said, “The killing of Mene by a Nigerian police officer is very unfortunate, and everything must be done to that officer to show Nigeria is not a monkey country where anything can just happen,”
In the video, Mene Ogidi, with his hands tied behind his back, was seen pleading for his life before he was allegedly shot in the leg and then fatally in the head by an officer attached to the Effurun Area Command.
Kanayo appealed directly to the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, to treat the matter with utmost seriousness.
“Please Inspector General of Police, Disu, this case must be taken seriously. My son could be involved tomorrow, your son might be as well,” he warned.
He further drew attention to the risks faced by practitioners in the movie industry, who frequently use firearms as props during productions.
“I work in the movie industry where sometimes we carry guns to shoot movies. Now imagine this type of police officer apprehending anyone in the movie industry with a gun, would he ever give the person a chance to explain what they are using it to do?”
Kanayo advised fellow movie producers to visit the nearest police station to obtain a fake gun licence for props to avoid tragic misunderstandings with overzealous officers.
PUNCHOnline had earlier reported the execution of the suspect, which sparked widespread condemnation across the country.
The Delta State Police Command has since arrested the officer directly involved in the shooting, identified as ASP Nuhu Usman, and transferred him to the Force Headquarters in Abuja for disciplinary action and investigation.
