A non-denominational civil society organisation, the Christian Conscience Group, has urged political stakeholders across the country to strengthen internal democracy within their political parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Reacting to the ongoing party primaries across the country, the group congratulated those who emerged victorious while urging those who lost to explore internal mechanisms for redress rather than defecting from one party to another.

“We wait for all parties to have their primary elections. Internal democracy must be strengthened if our democratic process is to continue to grow,” the statement read.
The group further stressed the need to protect Nigeria’s democratic system after many years of uninterrupted democratic rule, urging political actors to place national interest above personal ambition and calling on the electorate to prepare for the upcoming general elections.
On security, the organisation called on the Federal Government to go beyond existing measures in confronting the country’s lingering insecurity challenges.
“For the upteenth time, we call on the government to adopt unusual approach, think outside the box in tackling insecurity. Nigerians deserve a safer and better Nation than one where bandits continue to ravage communities unchecked,” the statement said.
While commending the efforts of the nation’s security and intelligence agencies, the group urged them to intensify intelligence gathering and deploy more resources and equipment towards identifying and apprehending bandits and their collaborators.
“Enough is enough of these senseless killings,” the group stated.
Nigeria’s 2027 general elections are still about two years away, but the political temperature across the country has already risen sharply, with party primaries, defections and realignments dominating the national conversation.
The ongoing wave of primaries has laid bare the fragility of internal democracy within Nigeria’s major political parties, with widespread allegations of imposition, vote-buying, harassment of aspirants and manipulation of electoral delegates generating controversy in several states.
