Thousands of mourners on Thursday thronged Zuru town as the remains of the Speaker of the Kebbi State House of Assembly, Muhammad Zuru, were laid to rest in a ceremony marked by grief and glowing tributes.

The late Speaker, who died on Monday, April 6, 2026, at a hospital in Cairo, Egypt, after a prolonged illness, was buried according to Islamic rites following a funeral prayer held at the Zuru Jumu’at Mosque at about 6:00 p.m.

The prayer was led by Imam Suleiman Tanko and attended by top government officials, traditional rulers, political leaders, and sympathisers from within and outside Kebbi State.
Among dignitaries present were Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris; Deputy Governor, Umar Abubakar Tafida; the Emir of Zuru, Muhammadu Sanusi Sami Gomo III; Senator Adamu Alieru; and former governor, Saidu Dakingari, among others.
Speaking during the burial, the governor described the late Speaker’s death as a devastating loss to the state and the nation, noting that his leadership and character would be sorely missed.
“We have lost a humble and committed leader whose dedication to the service of Kebbi State was unwavering. His death is not only a loss to his family and the people of Zuru Emirate but to the entire state and Nigeria as a whole,” the governor said.
The Emir of Zuru also paid tribute to the deceased, describing him as a man of peace who lived a life of service and integrity.
“He was a son of the soil who carried himself with dignity and worked tirelessly for the unity and progress of our people. His passing leaves a vacuum that will be difficult to fill,” the monarch said.
Colleagues of the late Speaker in the House of Assembly said he would be remembered for his calm disposition and commitment to legislative excellence.
One lawmaker, who spoke on behalf of the Assembly members, noted: “Rt Hon Zuru was a stabilising force in the Assembly. He led with wisdom, patience, and a deep sense of responsibility. We will continue to draw inspiration from his legacy.”
The large turnout of mourners, many of whom struggled to hold back tears, reflected the deep connection the late Speaker had with the people across different walks of life.
He is survived by his family, political associates, and a legacy widely described as one of humility, dedication, and selfless service.
