Baba announced his decision in a statement saying the move followed wide consultations with key political stakeholders within and outside the state.
According to him, the withdrawal became necessary to preserve unity, stability and cohesion within the APC ahead of the party’s governorship primaries.
“After due consultations and exhaustive meetings with the Vice-President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Kashim Shettima, the governors of Yobe and Borno states, party elders, political associates and critical stakeholders across the 17 local government areas, I have decided to withdraw my aspiration for the governorship ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections,” he said.
The former police boss described the decision as painful but necessary for the overall interest of the party and the state, urging his supporters to remain calm and continue backing the APC and its eventual candidate.
Baba also reaffirmed his commitment to the development of Yobe State despite stepping down from the contest.
His withdrawal came barely 24 hours after another APC governorship aspirant, Lawan Kolo Geidam, exited the race following consultations involving members of the G-6 aspirants’ bloc and Vice President Shettima in Abuja.
The remaining aspirants in the race include Senator Ibrahim Muhammed Bomai, Mustapha Yunusa Maihaja, Bashir Sheriff Machina and Kashim Musa Tumsah.
